(New York, NY) — The MTA has installed big yellow platform barriers at the 191st Street station in Manhattan as part of a pilot program to protect riders. The gates are up in a bid to stop straphangers from falling or being pushed onto the tracks. The fences have been placed parallel to the yellow warning strip at the platform’s edge. Each barrier ends where the doors of the subway train opens. Riders, many who say they stay from away from the edge of the platform are giving the barriers a big thumbs up.
The MTA says riders who use the Clark Street and West 8th Street Stations in Brooklyn will soon see the fencing go up. The MTA released a report last year that found track incidents, including falls and pushes had gone up. MTA leaders say straphangers asked them to find a solution to the problem.
