PERRY, Iowa — Investigators say a 17-year-old opened fire at a Perry Iowa high school  killing a sixth-grader and wounding five others.

The school is located about 40 miles from Des Moines.  It happened Thursday morning on the first day back at class after winter break.  Many students took cover in classrooms and offices when shots rang out—others ran out of the building.  Criminal investigators said one of the wounded victims was a school administrator.

Investigators say the suspect was found dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities are investigating the suspect’s motive and looking at social media posts.
