(New York, NY) – After Mayor Eric Adams issued an executive order aimed at restricting when buses carrying migrants can make drop offs, it appears a loophole has been discovered. Adams’ order mandates that charter buses provide the city with at least 32-hours notice, and charter buses can only drop off migrants at designated locations, between 8:30 AM and noon — on weekdays.
Adams issued the executive order alongside the mayors of Denver and Chicago, fellow Democrats. But less than a week later, it appears migrants are skirting those rules. Buses have been reportedly dropping off migrants at train stations in New Jersey, such as at Secaucus Junction. From there, migrants take trains into New York City, which is presumably preferable given the vast amount of services the Big Apple provides to migrants. Secaucus Mayor Michael Gonnelli says buses carrying migrants arrived in his city over the weekend, and Newark officials have reportedly been making contingency plans.
Mayor Adams executive order noted charter bus companies could face fines, lawsuits, or have their vehicles impounded for violating the mandate. During December, in which Customs and Border Patrol agents encountered a record-high number of migrants, around 14,700 were bused up from Texas — ending up in New York City. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has been sending busloads of migrants to sanctuary cities for months. In New York, Mayor Adams has pushed for 5% across-the-board budget cuts, partially in response to the ballooning costs associated with providing for the migrants.
