Four thousand may join the 2024 NYC Polar Bear Plunge.
(Brooklyn, NY) – It’s an annual (chilly) tradition. Many likely think it’s crazy. But it also raises money for tragedy. We’re talking about the 121st annual New York City Polar Bear Plunge.
Organized by the Coney Island Polar Bear Club, the event raised over $125,000 for charity last year. Other than a suggested donation, there is no fee to participate. Four thousand are expected to take an icy dip in the Atlantic Ocean at Coney Island. With a water temperature just over 45 degrees, and an expected high in terms of air temperature at 44 degrees, it’s not the worst-ever winter day for such an event. But people will most definitely be shivering and reaching for blankets and towels afterwards.
Unless you have a parent’s permission, all participants must be 18 or older. Everyone is also required to sign a waiver.
