After Devastating Floods, New NJ Law Is in Focus

(Trenton, NJ) – After North Jersey experienced devastating floods last week, a new law is set to take effect for 2024 that’s relevant. The Passaic River’s flood waters are slowly receding in spots like Paterson, Wayne, Little Falls, and Lodi. Now, the flood that resulted from heavy rainfall two weekend’s ago will make an impact for landlords and home owners.

Beginning in March 2024, a new law will require flood disclosure forms to be presented to prospective renters and homebuyers. That’s March 20 when it starts. The disclosure forms will provide potential tenants and buyers detailed information concerning a property’s history with flooding. The current law doesn’t require sellers or renters to disclose a property’s flood history.

Flooding is a routine issue for some North Jersey communities given the presence of rivers and reservoirs located along those rivers. Some experts maintain they will be even more common amid climate change. Many say state officials should do more to mitigate flood risks regardless of the cause.
