The NRF says 50% of Americans have unused gift cards.
(New York, NY) – Gift cards are a popular choice when giving during the Christmas and extended holiday season. They’re less impersonal than cash, but also allow gift givers flexibility. Don’t know exactly what to get that special someone? Go for a gift card. And many Americans do, according to the National Retail Federation. Prior to the holiday this year, the NRF predicted Americans would spend $30 billion on gift cards.
The vast majority of those cards are used on goodies, but a decent portion aren’t. In fact, tens of billions of dollars worth of gift cards go unspent annually. Bankrate just conducted a survey showing around half of all US adults have at least one unused card. On average, they’re worth around $200.
