MTA, NJ Officials Schedule Congestion Pricing Meeting

Weehawken, NJ: Aerial view of the helix leading into the Lincoln Tunnel during a relatively sparse morning commute.

(Trenton, NJ) – A public comment period is underway, as the MTA is attempting to move forward with its congestion pricing plan — aka the Central Business District Tolling Program. That gives commuters a chance to speak out, and many in New Jersey are upset. One of the main complaints is that while the MTA plans to collect an extra $15 for anyone who enters Manhattan south of 60th Street, none of those funds will go toward the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey — or for New Jersey Transit.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has sued the MTA to try and stop or alter the plan. There are some price breaks included in the current structure, like a $5 discount for anyone who enters through the Lincoln, Holland, or Battery Tunnels. In addition to Murphy’s lawsuit, as well as one filed by Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella, there’s pressure from people living in the suburbs and outer boroughs. Given the inadequacy of mass transit, many choose to drive into Manhattan for work.

So, New Jersey officials will meet with representatives of the MTA next month. On January 5, 2024 a meeting will be held. If the plan continues on without delay, the MTA wants to enforce it beginning this coming spring.
