Mayor Adams Joins Call for Assault Weapons Ban

(New York, NY) – New York City Mayor Eric Adams has signed on to a letter that’s calling for an outright ban on so-called assault weapons. Adams and 61 other mayors want newly-elected House Speaker Mike Johnson to pass federal legislation to that effect — particularly in the wake of the Lewiston, Maine mass shooting — in which the alleged shooter used an assault-style weapon.

In the letter, Adams and the other members of the mayor’s coalition say there should be more support now for a ban, as opposed to in recent years. Mayors from places that have experienced mass shootings are part of the coalition, including officials from Buffalo, New York and Highland Park, Illinois. An assault weapon’s ban has failed to gain traction in Congress to date.

Many who support the 2nd Amendment say assault weapons bans violate the spirit of the law — even if they generally support gun control methods.
