Jim Jordan
(Washington, DC) – Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan is no longer the Republicans’ designated nominee for Speaker of the House. Following a third round of voting on Friday, Jordan failed to secure the 217 votes need to secure the speaker’s gavel. He received 194 votes in the most recent round, which is fewer than he had secured in the first and second round. The house is now in recess. It’s ability to conduct business is more or less on hold without a speaker.
New York Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, the House Minority Leader, received 210 votes — all of the chamber’s Democrats voted for him. But Jordan, a Republican, failed to rally such unanimous support from his party, as Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise and California Rep. Kevin McCarthy also received votes.
McCarthy, the most recent Speaker of the House, was voted out in an effort led by Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz. Jordan is considered a strong ally of former President Trump, and a group of “Never Trump” congressmembers from Long Island are among those who refuse to vote for Jordan.
