(New York, NY) – According to reports, Manhattan congestion pricing is about eight months away from becoming reality. May 2024 is when the MTA’s plan would take effect, per a timeline that’s reportedly been confirmed by the MTA.

New York City would become the first US municipality to enact the plan. There’s been speculation the toll could charge motorists up to $24 to drive south of 60th Street in Manhattan. It’s possible the final number could be different, and some exemptions have been suggested. For example, for-hire drivers working for Uber or Lyft may only be charged once a day.

New Jersey lawmakers have pushed back against the plan, saying residents will be in essence “double taxed” because they already pay big tolls at the Hudson River crossings. Plus, the money collected by the MTA won’t benefit NY-NJ crossings which are controlled by Port Authority. Congestion pricing revenue is supposed to go toward rebuilding and enhancing the New York City subway system.

The exact price of the toll and which drivers would be exempt could be made public by next month.
