ANNAPOLIS , MD- Former NYC Police and Fire Commissioner Howard Safir has died at the age of 81
Safir’s son telling the New York Times his father died Monday at a Hospital in Annapolis Maryland from a sepsis infection.
Safir headed up the FDNY in the mid-1990s under Mayor Giuliani, and then served at Giuliani’s police commissioner from 1996-to-2000.
As Fire Commissioner in the 1990’s, Safir visited every firehouse and led efforts to reorganize the department.
Later, Safir served as Police Commissioner, helping to reduce crime while also responding to citizen complaints, and creating the NYPD’s Courtesy, Professionalism and Respect program.
