(Jersey City, NJ) – The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office is investigating after responding police officers fatally shot a man on Sunday afternoon. Family members say they called for medical support after 52-year-old Andrew Jerome Washington began suffering a mental health crisis. He reportedly dealt with bi-polar disorder and Schizophrenia.

At some point, the medical center team that responded called the Jersey City Police Department — according to both Public Safety Director James Shea and Mayor Steven Fulop. Cops say Washington charged at them with a knife, at which point they fired. The officers involved were wearing body cam footage and that’s been submitted to the AG’s office. Fulop is calling for the AG to release the body cam footage as soon as possible, in a bid for transparency.
