(Brooklyn, NY) – New York State officials are moving closer to setting up a new tent city in order to shelter migrants — this time at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn. On Monday, Governor Kathy Hochul announced the federal government has signed off on both the state and New York City making use of the space.

The plan is for about 2,000 migrants to be housed at the Floyd Bennett Field ten city. It will mark the third such site funded by the state. Officials recently opened a tent city on Randall’s Island.

Big picture, the city says it’s out of shelter space, all while more migrants continue to arrive. The city plans to eventually open a Humanitarian Emergency Relief Center at Floyd Bennett Field. In order to help the migrants attain legal work status and potentially file asylum claims, $20 million will be provided by the state to pay for case workers.
