It’s tough identifying the dead in Hawaii

Wildfire wreckage is shown Friday, Aug. 11, 2023, in Lahaina, Hawaii. Hawaii increasingly seems under siege from disasters, and what is increasing most is wildfire, according to an analysis of Federal Emergency Management Agency records by The Associated Press. There were as many federally-declared disaster wildfires this month in Hawaii, as in the 50 years between 1953 and 2003. (AP Photo/Rick Bowmer)

(Maui, HI) — Hawaii Governor Josh Green says the search for the remains of additional wildfire victims in Lahaina has now become a race against time. Only a small number of the dead have been identified. Green says undiscovered remains, if not found in time, will be further degraded by rain and other weather conditions, making them more difficult to identify.  Seven of the dead were apparently a family discovered in a single household.  The death toll in the fires has climbed past 110.
