(Washington, DC) – US Attorney General Merrick Garland has appointed a special counsel in the Hunter Biden criminal case. He’s elevated US Attorney David Weiss of Delaware to special counsel. Garland notes this means Weiss has full prosecutorial power. Weiss was part of the investigative team that has been looking at alleged tax violations that may have been committed by Hunter, President Biden’s son.
A plea deal that was expected to result in Hunter avoiding jail time blew up last month, after a federal judge objected to its terms. That may have paved the way for Weiss being appointed special counsel. AG Garland says Weiss informed him on Tuesday of this week he could not complete his duties in the case unless his status was elevated. A series of whistleblowers also came forward recently to allege the Hunter Biden case had not been properly handled.
