(New York, NY) — A study conducted by Environment America reported last year that more than half of New York’s state beaches exhibited unsafe levels of fecal contamination. Yes, you heard it, New York beaches are contaminated with human Feces.
The contamination spread from sewage overflows and industrial operations. Despite widespread contamination, only one public beach in New York City was closed due to poor water quality. Notable advisories were issued for Wolfe’s Pond Park, Manhattan Beach, Orchard Beach, Midland Beach and Cedar Grove Beach due to high bacteria levels indicating human fecal presence. However, beaches like Coney Island, Rockaway Beach, and South Beach remained free from such advisories.
Fecal water contamination can lead to numerous health issues, with around 57 million cases of waterborne illnesses reported in the U.S annually. The report blames the country’s inadequate and aging sewage infrastructure and urban sprawl for these issues.
