(New York, NY) – Heads up if you’re headed out on the water this weekend, authorities in New Jersey are cracking down on drunk boating. It’s a popular time to get the boat out, given the Fourth of July holiday – and people will be looking to beat the humidity while enjoying the cool sea breeze.

New Jersey State Troopers will be out in big numbers, looking for people who are operating boats and other watercraft while under the influence. They’re calling it Operation Dry Water. In 2022, 636 people were killed in boating accidents nationwide, according to Coast Guard stats. The bulk of those incidents involved boat operators drinking alcohol. Fines for drinking and boating in New Jersey range between $250 and $400.
