(New York, NY) – Mayor Eric Adams and Department of Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch have announced new details in New York City’s bid to combat the growing rat population.

These new measures include getting trash bags off the sidewalks and requiring restaurants to dispose of their trash in secure containers. Officials say the secure container requirement applies to chain businesses with five or more locations in the city. This includes a quarter of all businesses across the city, which are responsible for nearly four million pounds of waste everyday.

Commissioner Tisch commented on the new plan: “New York is the home of the best restaurants in the world. I know it, you know it – and the rats know it, too. When you leave food behind, they’re ready for a gourmet meal, with the black bags outside food-related businesses basically serving as a to-go box for the rats. That ends now.”
