(Boston, MA) – The US Coast Guard has confirmed that a robotic sub has located demolished parts of the mini-sub that had gone missing, after taking tourists down into the deep Atlantic Ocean, in order to see the wreckage of the Titanic. Oceangate, the company that operated the tour, has confirmed the five people on board have died. This ends a search that had been ongoing since Sunday, when the submersible went missing, 1 hour and 45 minutes into its descent.

Both US and Canadian officials had been involved in the rescue effort, which focused on an area about 900 miles east of Cape Cod. Earlier in the week banging sounds were heard, renewing hope of a rescue. But by this morning it was also clear the sub’s oxygen supply had run out, before a large debris field was later spotted. Then, by afternoon, officials had confirmed the sub’s destruction and the passenger’s deaths.
