(New York, NY) – On Monday, New York City Mayor Eric Adams signed legislation into law that’s aimed at protecting things like gender reassignment surgery and hormone therapy. It comes during Pride Month, which honors the LGBTQ+ community and the push for equal rights. But increasingly, controversy surrounding transgender issues – especially for adolescents – has come to the forefront. That’s also true for transgender athletes, and the debate over whether or not athletic competition should be organized by birth gender.

Sherry Sylvester is with the Texas Public Policy Foundation. She responded to a recent Gallup poll that shows 69% of Americans feel athletes should compete against others of the same birth gender.

Just a quarter of the survey’s respondents said athletes should be permitted to pay on teams lining up with their gender identity. That’s down 8% from 2021. The poll’s organizers say it seems as though Americans “view transgender sports participation more through a lens of competitive fairness than transgender civil rights.”
