On Wednesday, March 8th, 77 WABC will be celebrating International Women’s Day with special guests, highlighting their accomplishments and contributions as women. International Women’s Day beginnings are attributed to various movements in the beginning of the 1900’s and is celebrated around the world on March 8th, focusing on the historical, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also calls attention to discrimination and gender inequality. International Women’s Day began with suffrage movements in New Zealand, labor movements in North America and Europe, including in Russia when women began a four day strike, demanding peace and bread on March 8, 1917.In 1975, The United National began celebrating March 8th as International Women’s Day and in 1977 proclaimed March 8th as an official UN holiday for women’s rights and world peace.

The day is now celebrated by over 100 countries with different traditions, some veering away from the original meanings, but many are returning to its roots — recognizing women’s rights around the world.

In several countries it is an official holiday and in others it is a day that is broadly observed.
