NEW YORK (77WABC) — New York’s Governor and New York City’s mayor delivered joint speeches Wednesday on the future of the city following the coronavirus pandemic — addressing less foot traffic, affordable housing and empty office space.

Governor Kathy Hochul has an ambitious goal of building 800,000 new housing units over the next decade to address an affordable housing crisis. Hochul said the city seems to have plateaued post pandemic, citing lower office occupancy, lower subway ridership and decreased foot traffic in Midtown.

She vowed to make business districts stronger, transit commutes easier and focus on safety.

Mayor Adams says there needs to be a conversation of how remote work impacts mom and pop stores. He calls it a moonshot moment to redefine what businesses are like.

The mayor also said potentially violent people cannot continue to be allowed to return to the streets — eluding to the need for bail reform.
