U.S.-NEW YORK-RESPIRATORY ILLNESSES-SURGE
NEW YORK (77WABC) — Health officials are dealing with a triple whammy — with the flu, COVID and RSV cases expected to spike even more due to holiday gatherings.
The uptick is putting a strain on New York City hospitals. New York Governor Kathy Hochul is urging folks to get up to date with flu and coronavirus vaccine shots.
“These numbers are spiking way too early compared to historical trends,” Hochul said. “And we have 27,000 positive cases right now.”
Statistics show only 13% of New York’s population eligible for the latest COVID booster have gotten it. The state has seen a 75% increase in positive flu cases since the beginning of the flu season started eight weeks ago.
