NEW YORK(77WABC) —The NYPD has released new details regarding this mornings fatal crash on the Cross Bronx Expressway.
Police say an unidentified female driving a range rover SUV was pronounced dead at the scene after rearing ending a tractor trailer at University Avenue. Both the woman and the 43-year-old driver of the tractor trailer remained at the scene.
The woman’s Range Rover SUV was then hit from behind by a second tractor trailer causing the woman’s SUV to partially enter the back of the first tractor trailer and overturn.
The SUV and the two tractor trailers became engulfed or partially engulfed in flames. The two operators of the tractor trailers were not injured and remained at the scene.
Police report the initial crash happened at 12:34 am.
Police say the driver of the second tractor trailer is 53-years-old.
The first tractor trailer was contractor by the United States Postal Service.
The fatal crash closed both ways of the Cross Bronx Expressway causing extensive delays for the accident investigation involving the NYPD’S Highway District Collissin Investigation Squad.
There are no arrests and the investigation remains ongoing.
