A Man Wielding a Machete and a Butcher Knife Shot Twice

Brooklyn, NY  (77WABC) — A man was shot twice as he charged at an NYPD Police Lt. refusing to drop a 20 inch machete and a large butcher knife. Police say James Olla of 202 New Lots Avenue in Brooklyn, NY faces several charges including attempted assault, attempted assault on a police officer and criminal possession of a weapon.

The NYPD’s Chief of Patrol Chief Jeffrey Maddrey, held a press conference Tuesday detailing the incident.

Chief Maddrey says prior to the confrontation with the Lt., the suspect, Olla allegedly assaulted a family member at his residence and then went to 26 Court Street in downtown Brooklyn, where police say Olla viscously beat a 58-year-old woman female mental health worker. Olla then returned home allegedly also assaulting a neighbor with the machete before police arrived.

Police say Olla refused multiple orders from the Lt. to drop his weapon outside 202 New Lots Avenue.  Olla approached the Lt. with the knife and a machete. The Lt. shot Olla twice, once in his groin and thigh area.

Olla was taken to a hospital and he is expected to recover.

Two officers were taken to a hospital for ringing in their ears.

Chief Maddrey says the task force investigation division is continuing to investigate.

Olla is also charged with Attempted Assault: Intent to Injure a Police Officer and Menacing a Police Officer according to the NYPD.
