(77WABC) — Our beloved Bernard McGuirk, host of the “Bernie & Sid in the Morning” Program with co-host Sid Rosenberg, died on Wednesday, Oct. 5th, 2022 following a courageous battle with prostate cancer.
According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men but can often be treated successfully. If you have prostate cancer or are close to someone who does, knowing what to expect can help you cope.
Prostate cancer is rare in men younger than 40, but the chance of having prostate cancer rises rapidly after age 50. It can develop more often in African American men and in Caribbean men of African ancestry than in men of other races.
Prostate cancer seems to run in some families, which suggests that in some cases there may be an inherited or genetic factor. Still, most prostate cancers occur in men without a family history of it.
The American Cancer Society says men who eat a lot of dairy products appear to have a slightly higher chance of getting prostate cancer. They also say the best advice to possibly reduce the risk of prostate cancer is to get to and stay at a healthy weight and keep physically active.
For preventative care, the ACS says some research suggests men who take a daily aspirin might have a lower risk of getting and dying from prostate cancer. Prostate cancer can often be found early by testing for prostate-specific antigen levels in a man’s blood by pricking your finger, or by a digital rectal exam.
Symptoms of prostate cancer may include problems urinating, blood in the urine or semen, erectile dysfunction, pain in the hips, back and chest, weakness or numbness in the legs or feet, or even loss of bladder or bowel control.
