NEW YORK, NEW YORK -(77 WABC)- You are more likely to be a victim of a crime on the subway now then before the pandemic–according to data reported by the Post.
Last month, there were 2.14 crimes per million riders, dramatically higher than the pre-COVID August 2019 rate of 1.5 crimes per million riders.
NYPD Chief of Department Kenneth Corey says the media is driving public concerns about safety while riding.
He pointed to increased train patrols and a surge in arrests and summonses in the subways.
Transit officials say their own data shows there’s been a major drop in the number of homeless in the subways and at Penn Station.
