(77WABC) — The raid on Mar-a-Lago was based largely on information from an FBI confidential source. A source able to identify what documents former President Donald Trump was in possession of and where they were located — this according to two senior government officials who spoke to Newsweek.
The officials were granted anonymity.
The FBI raid was reportedly deliberately timed to occur when the while Trump was not at his Mar-a-Lago estate. The effort to keep the raid low-key, including agents wearing plainclothes, prompted a furious response from GOP leaders and Trump supporters.
A justice official said “what a spectacular backfire.”
Both senior government officials say the raid was scheduled with no political motive, the FBI solely intent on recovering highly classified documents that were illegally removed from the White House.
