NEW YORK (77WABC) — Not long after they announced it, the NYPD says it’s news to them about a directive to end Marijuana testing for police officers — quickly reversing the order.
City cops will no longer be tested for marijuana–that was the big headline Wednesday—but only a few hours later NYPD Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell issued a memo to department commanders stating, “existing department policies that prohibit the use of marijuana remain in effect. Members of the service are not permitted to use cannabis on or off duty and will continue to be subject to random, scheduled, and for-cause drug screening.”
The NYPD was told by the New York City Law Department to end all “random, scheduled and pre-employment testing” for marijuana.
Meanwhile, a memo from the Fire Department of New York said it will follow guidance and stop the random testing. According to the memo, the guidance will be laid out in details over the coming weeks.
