(77WABC) — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention raised its alert level for monkeypox to level 2 on Monday.

The CDC is recommending travelers wear masks, among other health measures. As of June 3, there have been 21 recorded monkeypox cases in the U.S. connected to the current outbreak, according to the CDC.
The monkeypox outbreak began following two raves in Belgium and Spain related to sex between homosexual men. Monkeypox is a rare viral illness that can result in hospitalization or death although it usually does not result in severe illness.
