NEW YORK (77WABC) — An effort is afoot to draft former three term New York Republican Governor George Pataki out of retirement and back into politics.

The new website “bringbackpataki.com” is urging New Yorkers to sign a petition in support. The draft Pataki movement is being spearheaded by his former political director Rob Cole.

“Embattled by leftist ideologues and corrupt bureaucrats, the Democratic Party has left New York less affordable, less safe and less proactive in responding to its citizen’s needs,” says the website. “This is why our state needs Fmr. Governor of New York George Pataki to return, and set our state in the correct path for a better tomorrow. He has recovered our state from irresponsible leadership before, and he will do it again.”

Pataki was governor of New York from 1995 to 2006 after defeating three-term liberal democratic incumbent Mario Cuomo, the father of disgraced ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Pataki led the state’s recovery following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack, approved income-tax cuts and championed a law to open charter schools.
