77WABC Celebrates Lunar New Year – Feb. 1

On Monday, January 31st, 2022 and Tuesday, February 1st, 2022, WABC will be celebrating the Lunar New Year, also known as Spring Festival, in Chinatown, New York City, and in WABC’s Studio77 located in Midtown, Manhattan. 

Lunar New Year, with its long association to the moon, is celebrated by almost two billion people across the world, mainly in countries in East Asia. Lunar New Year lasts for 16 days until the start of the Lantern Festival on February 15th, 2022.  The New Year celebrates Asian culture and traditions and wishes all good fortune and prosperity.

The Lunar New Year calendar is comprised of 12 animals, each animal occurring every 12 years. This year is The Year of the Tiger and  it is said that people born in a Year of the Tiger are brave, competitive, unpredictable, and confident.  

Additionally, some traditions include, wearing red, visiting relatives, eating 7 traditional foods, fish, dumplings, spring rolls, longevity noodles, good fortune fruit, tangyuan (sweet rice noodles), niangao (glutinous rice cakes) and firecracker and fireworks.

To celebrate the commencement of Lunar New Year, on Monday, January 31, 2022, 77 WABC, in partnership with the Concerned Citizens of East Broadway and various pillars of the Chinatown community, held a Press Conference at The Golden Unicorn located in Chinatown, New York City. On Tuesday, February 1, 2022, WABC, in partnership with Dim Sum Palace and Fairy Dance School, will be live streaming their annual Lunar New Year party at WABC’s Studio77. It can be viewed, Tuesday, February 1st, 2022 live on WABCradio.tv at 12PM EST.

Special guests include Jacky Wong, William Su, Ammy Lim, Edward Cuccia, Nolan Cheng, Terry Chan, and Mary Wang.
