NEW YORK (77 WABC) – An 11-month-old baby girl is in critical condition after being shot in the face by a stray bullet in the back seat of a parked car with her mother.

It happened around 6:45 pm Wednesday near the intersection of East 198th Street and Valentine Avenue.  Police say a man nearby started firing at another man, with one of the  bullets hitting the baby in the cheek.  Police say she was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital before being transferred to another area hospital.

“This is not the city our children should grow up in,” Mayor Eric Adams said Wednesday night. “If tonight wasn’t a wake up call, then I don’t know what will wake us up.”

No arrests had been made as of early Thursday, according to the NYPD

The baby and her mother who was not hurt, were reportedly not the intended targets.
