New York, NY – (77WABC) – NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell is concerned about police safety as well as public safety because of polices announced this week by newly appointed Manhattan District Attorney, Alvin Bragg. Sewell made this clear in an email she sent to the police that was obtained by The New York Post.

In it, the NYPD Commissioner says, “I have studied these policies and I am very concerned about the implications to your safety as police officers, the safety of the public and justice for the victims. I am making my concerns known to the Manhattan District Attorney and hope to have frank and productive discussions to try and reach more common ground.”

In his first order of business, Bragg sent a memo to his staff not to prosecute many low-level offenses, to pursue reduced charges for certain crimes and to forgo bail except for the most serious cases.

Sewell said this will erode the quality of life in the city, and sends the message to cops they are not protected. In the same email Sewell sent to police, she said she has already broached some of these issues with Bragg.

A request for a comment from the DA’s office was not immediately returned to The Post as of late Friday night.
