MINEOLA, NEW YORK -(77WABC)- Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman is defying New York State’s masks mandate for school children.

The newly elected Republican signing a series of executive orders Thursday, including one giving local school boards the power to scrap mask mandates.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul firing back at Blackman, saying “state laws prevail over local government initiatives,” adding “the State Education Department directs control over funding of school districts.”

Blakeman said he is confident that the order carries sufficient legal weight to enable districts to defy state masking rules.
