Suffolk County Police Officers Help Save the Life of a 4-Year-Old

Central Islip, NY (77WABC)-Suffolk County Police Third Precinct officers Tuesday provided life-saving aid to a child a child who was having difficulty breathing at the family’s home in Central Islip.

Parents of the 4-year-old-boy, who suffers from congenital central hypoventilation syndrome, called 9-1-1 reporting their son was not breathing. When responding officers from the 3rd precinct arrived to the residence on Spur Drive the boy was turning blue. Officer Matthew Denicola began CPR and Officer Matthew Carrello assisted with care. Officer Samantha Ventura, who is a fluent Spanish speaker, communicated with the child’s family, who spoke limited English.

Members of Exchange Ambulance of the Islip responded to transport the child. While in the ambulance, Third Precinct Officer Makesi Oliver, who is a member of the SCPD Medical Crisis Action Team (MEDCAT), observed the child had no pulse. Officer Oliver utilized an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) on the child to regain a pulse.

The child was transported to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore where he was listed in stable condition.
