NEW YORK (77WABC) — A nearly 40-foot long humpback whale was found dead along the Staten Island shoreline Friday morning.
“It’s a humpback whale, which happens to be one of the species of whales that we do encounter on waters here, and we seem to be seeing them a little bit more than we have in previous years,” Rob DiGiovanni, the founder and chief scientist at the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, told The New York Post.
The whale was seen “floating offshore”, with the cause of death not yet determined, DiGiovanni said. He added that he planned to work with local groups and the Park Service to remove the sea creature.
DiGiovanni also mentioned that the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society will conduct an examination to determine how it died.
