NEW YORK, NY (77ABC) – New York City Parks has closed their beaches from Sunday, August 22nd through Monday, August 23rd. Outdoor dining will be suspended on Sunday, August 22nd due Hurricane Henri headed for the New York area.

Hurricane Tips:

1.) Bring inside loose, lightweight objects, such as lawn furniture and garbage cans.

2.) Anchor objects that will be unsafe to bring inside, like gas grills or propane tanks. Turn off propane tanks.

3.) Close windows and outside doors securely.

4.) Move valuable items from basements to upper floors. (Basements are vulnerable to flooding.)

5.) Charge cell phone batteries.

6.) Top off your vehicle and generator with fuel.

7.) Consider moving your vehicle to higher ground if you live in an evacuation zone.

8.) Turn your refrigerator and freezer to a colder setting. If you lose power, items that need refrigeration will stay cooler for longer.

9.) Refill prescription medications (if possible).

10.) Take out extra cash (if possible).

11.) Residents of high-rise apartment buildings and basement apartments may face special risks from hurricanes even if they live outside evacuation zone boundaries.

a. If you live in a high-rise building, make sure your windows are closed, stay away from windows in case they break or shatter.

b. Basements are vulnerable to flooding. If you live in a basement apartment, be prepared to take shelter above ground.

12.) Gather supplies. Every household member should have a “Go Bag” — a collection of items you may need during an evacuation — packed in an easy-to-carry container such as a backpack.

13.) You may need to shelter in place (stay at home) during and after a hurricane.

If you have a power outage, please call 800-752-6633. If you live in public housing, please call 718-707-7771. For down trees, please call 3-1-1.
