A Dramatic Rescue of Three Kayakers at Captree State Park

BAY SHORE, NY (77WABC) — A dramatic rescue Monday afternoon, as the Suffolk County Marine Bureau rescued three kayakers at Captree State Park after receiving a 911 call.

Police aboard the “Marine Juliette” responded to the Park finding three kayakers in the water at approximately 3:10 p.m. A Farmingdale man, Brian Consey was kayaking when his vessel capsized near a dock.

Two family members, Steven and Debra Leonardo, attempted to aid Consey when their kayak also overturned. All three were clinging to the pilings under the dock when Marine Bureau and NY State Park Police officers, as well as the United States Coast Guard, arrived on scene.

Marine Bureau Officer Chris Maggio jumped into action going into the water to assist Debra Leonardo safely through the strong current and out from under the dock.

The pair swam with the current until they were able to safely pull themselves onto Marine Juliette at approximately 3:30 p.m. US Coast Guard and NY State Park Police officers were able to rescue Steven Leonardo off the piling.

Consey, with the assistance of law enforcement officers and good Samaritans on the dock, was able to climb to safety.

The kayakers, 61-year-old Steven and 57-year-old Debra Leonardo both of North Babylon, and 55-year-old Brian Consey ,were evaluated on scene by Islip Rescue and declined further medical treatment.
