Bronx, NY (77WABC)-Police say they’ve arrested a Bronx man in the murder of a beloved 91-year-old, Nicholas Rappa, known as the Mayor of his block on Wicham Avenue.
The 91-year-old went to the grocery store and walked home around 12:30 pm on Tuesday August 3rd. Police believed the man was followed. Rappa was found dead inside his shed. Police say he had been bound and beaten in what is believed to have been a robbery. Rappa was pronounced dead at the scene.
The NYPD had released photo’s of the suspect, dressed as a utility worker and of a white pick up truck he was believed to have been driving in an effort to find the suspect.
Under arrest is 32-year-old Luis Bonilla of 328 East 197th Street Apt. 3B. He is charged with murder, manslaughter, robbery and assault in connection with Rappa’s death.
CrimeStoppers had announced a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest in the case. Up to $3,500 payable by CrimeStoppers upon arrest and indictment and $6,500 payable by NYPD upon arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for Rappa’s murder. It is unclear at this time if anyone will be claiming the reward.
