Remington Offers a $33 Million Dollar Settlement to Families of The Sandy Hook Massacre

North Carolina (77WABC)-Reuters is reporting that the Remington Arms Co has offered a $33 million dollar settlement to nine families to settle lawsuits  related to the 2012 Sandy Hook school massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, where 26 people died.

The lawsuits allege that Remington’s  marketing of firearms contributed to the 2012 massacre.

A federal judge is overseeing Remington’s bankruptcy case in Alabama and would have to approve the settlement if its accepted by victims families.

In a court filing in February,  lawyers for victims families estimated that wrongful death claims likely totaled more than $225 million, and total claims including punitive damages could exceed $1 billion.

Josh Koskoff, one of the families’ lawyers, on Tuesday said his clients would “consider their next steps” in response to the $33 million dollar offer from Huntsville, Alabama-based Remington.

Twenty students and six adults were killed on Dec. 14, 2012. Gunman Adam Lanza, used a Remington Bushmaster rifle as he shot his way into the Sandy Hook Elementary School after shooting his mother to death at home.

The violence ended when Lanza committed suicide as he heard police sirens approach the elementary school.
