DC: Vought Nomination Hearing
GILLETTE, Wyo. (AP/77WABC) — A former spokesperson for retired Sen. Mike Enzi (R) of Wyoming says the retired Senator has died at the age of 77 of injuries sustained in a bicycle accident last Friday.
Sen. Enzi, former chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, was known as a consensus-builder in an increasingly polarized Washington.
Former Enzi spokesman Max D’Onofrio says Enzi died peacefully Monday surrounded by family and friends. Enzi had been hospitalized with a broken neck and ribs after a bicycle accident near Gillette on Friday. Enzi was stabilized before being flown to a hospital in Colorado. Police say they’ve seen no indication anybody else was nearby or involved in the accident.
The former Senator retired from the Senate in January. He is survived by his wife, three children and several grandchildren.
During his tenure, Enzi was consistently ranked one of the Senate’s most conservative members. He was a member of the 2009 Gang of Six that attempted to negotiate health care reform. From 2015 until his retirement from the Senate, he chaired the Senate Budget Committee, during the 114th, 115th, and 116th Congresses.
