The 1st Guantanamo Bay Detainee Transferred to His Home Country Under the Biden Administration

Washington, D.C. (AP/77WABC) – A detainee at the notorious Guantanamo Bay detention facility has been released to his home country. The US Pentagon said this morning in a statement that its Periodic Review Board found that Abdullatif Nasser’s detention at Guantanamo Bay was no longer needed to protect U.S. national security.

The move marks the first time the Biden administration has transferred a detainee out detention from Guantánamo Bay. Nasser was cleared for repatriation to his home country of Morocco by a Periodic Review Board in 2016. He remained at Guantanamo for the duration of the Trump presidency.

The transfer of Nasser could suggest President Joe Biden is making efforts to reduce the Guantanamo population, which now stands at 39.
