WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, Manhattan (WABC) –A Detective with the NYPD DCPI Office (Deputy Commissioner, Public Information) has confirmed to 77WABC Radio that a motorist was carjacked by men on dirt bikes and shot multiple times in his head on the Washington Bridge over the Harlem River (connecting Manhattan and the Bronx) early this morning.
Police say the 45-year-old man was driving at approximately 12:15 a.m. when he was approached by a group of individuals riding dirt bikes. The man was shot several times in his head crashing his vehicle.
According to police, suspects then removed the unconscious man from his vehicle dumping his body. One of the suspects fled with the vehicle crashing it nearby on the Cross Bronx Expressway at University Avenue.
The carjacking caused the bridge to be closed from Washington Heights going into the Bronx at 181st Street.
The Detective says there are no arrests in the case.
Police tell 77WABC the man shot was taken to Lincoln Hospital. Police say he is expected to survive despite being shot multiple times in his head.
An investigation is ongoing.
