New York, NY (77WABC)-The NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating yet another attack against an Asian American on the streets of NYC. Police say the latest attack happened in front of 122 West 26th Street just before Noon on Monday, June 21st. Police say a 23-year-old woman was walking down the street when she was suddenly approached from behind by a male suspect who kicked her in her back and leg while making anti-Asian statements.

The suspect produced a knife when a male good samaritan tried to intervene in the attack.   Police say the good samaritan was menaced with the knife before the attacker fled on foot eastbound on West 26th Street.

According to the NYPD’s Hate Crimes Dash Board, there’ve been 42 reported hate crimes against Asian Americans in NYC in 2021, with 17 arrests, fueled by resentment over the Covid19 viral pandemic believed to have originated in Wuhan, China.

The attached photo of the suspect police are seeking shows him in the vicinity of West 26 Street and 6 Avenue.

The woman who was attacked refused medical attention according to police.

Anyone with information in regard to this incident is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782).
