A Man Charged with Manslaughter in the Shooting Death of a Retired NYPD Officer

New York, NY (77WABC)-A Queens man is charged in the death of an off-duty 57-year-old NYPD Police Officer who came to the aide of an 86-year-old man being threatened at a Korner Pizza located at East 3rd Street and Church Avenue Monday evening. The retired officer died at Maimonides Medical Center after being shot in his torso.

Charged is 33-year-old Michael Soto of 80 Church Avenue in Brooklyn. Police say he is charged with Manslaughter, Criminally Negligent Homicide, and assault.

NYPD Deputy Chief Joseph Gulotta of Brooklyn South outside of Korner Pizza Monday night providing details of the shooting incident:

Soto was shot in his right arm during the struggle during which police say he pulled out a gun and fired one shot. He was last reported in stable condition at Maimonides.  A 57-year-old Correction Officer also attempting to help the 86-year-old man was unharmed.

Police say they responded to the location on a report of a man with a gun.

An investigation continues.
