New York (77WABC) – New medical research suggests that if you’ve been sick with COVID, a vaccine won’t help you the same way it will if you haven’t gotten sick.

In a report from News Medical, scientists from the Cleveland Clinic have recently studied the effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccine between those with or without previously getting the virus. The research determined that those who got the virus don’t get additional benefits from vaccine, and that vaccines should be prioritized to those who haven’t been infected.

The study was conducted on 52,238 employees in the Cleveland Clinic, and it was it was shown that the vaccine significantly reduced the risk of COVID-19 infection in uninfected participants but not in infected participants. The study did not show how long someone would be protected, but previously infected participants remained protected against COVID-19 for at least 10 months after symptoms or positive test results.

As of Sunday, 140 million people, or 42.6% of the population has been fully vaccinated. Over 303 million have gotten their first vaccine dose.
