Queens, NY (77WABC)-A Queens man is charged in an unprovoked assault of a 75-year-old Asian woman who suffered a fractured nose and broken eye socket in last month’s attack.
Police say 24-year-old Christian Batista of 104-51 39th Avenue is charged with two counts of assault in the attack on the woman. Police from the 110th Precinct in Elmurst say, Batista, who is Hispanic, is charged with one count of assault in the second degree and one count of assault in the third degree.
Investigators say the Asian woman was walking in the area of 97th Place and 57th Avenue the afternoon of May 26th, when she was suddenly physically assaulted. She fell to the ground after being punched and was taken to Elmhurst Hospital where she was treated for a fractured right nose and right orbital bone.
The NYPD’s Hate Crimes Dashboard says there’ve been 44 reported incidents targeting Asian Americans with 20 arrests since January 1 of this year, largely fueled by anger resulting from the Viral Pandemic believed to have resulted in China.
