New York, NY (77WABC)-An Asian woman is recovering after being brutally assaulted in midtown Manhattan with a hammer. The 31-year-old recent FIT graduate was walking on West 42nd St. Sunday with a 29-year-old female friend when an unidentified individual demanded that the women remove their face masks. The suspect then hit the 31-year-old in the head with a hammer.

The suspect fled on foot. The woman suffered a head laceration and was transported by EMS to NYU Medical Center for treatment of her injuries.

Corr. Bob Brown reports on this story in which  you can hear a comment from the woman attacked:

The NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force is investigating the incident. Police say the suspect fled on foot. It’s hoped the public can help identify the suspect from the video attached to this article.

To date, the NYPD says there has been a 400% increase in attacks against Asian Americans in 2021 fueled by anger from the Covid-19 pandemic believed to have originated in China.

Anyone with information in regard to this incident is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website at WWW.NYPDCRIMESTOPPERS.COM, or on Twitter @NYPDTips.
