NEW YORK (77WABC) – Governor Cuomo procured a $4 million dollar book deal as his staff scrambled to hide to true death toll of the number of people who died in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the New York Times, Cuomo’s lucrative book deal “overlapped with the move by his most senior aides to reshape a report about nursing home deaths in a way that insulated the governor from criticism and burnished his image.”
Cuomo also utilized the resources of his office — from his inner circle to far more junior personnel — to help with the book’s manuscript which touted his leadership during the pandemic.
The book, “American Crisis: Leadership Lessons from the Covid-19 Pandemic,” landed Cuomo on the best sellers list.
Cuomo leaned on his top aide, Melissa DeRosa, for assistance. She attended video meetings with publishers, and helped him edit early drafts of the book. But there was also another, more pressing edit underway at the same time.
An impending Health Department report threatened to disclose a far higher number of nursing home deaths related to Cuomo’s March 25th mandate that required all New York State nursing homes to admit COVID-19 positive patients.
The State Attorney General’s office revealed the death toll was significantly higher, about 50% higher.
Rather than about 8 thousand residents who died, it was about 15 thousand.
Currently there is a pending federal investigation into the Cuomo’s administration handling of the nursing home crisis.
